Star date 1234.5 — free-to-play Star Trek Online MMO on consoles today

More On: Star Trek Online

We reviewed Star Trek Online on PC back in 2010 [GN score 7 out of 10]. Regardless of the realities faced in video game production, the game felt like it was trying to beat Star Wars: The Old Republic out of the gate. Friendly rivalries exist between the Star Trek and Star Wars communities, but there's a lot of overlap in the audiences; the Venn Diagram is probably two circles nearly eclipsing each other.

But Star Trek Online is on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today, free to play, with in-game purchases. As our recent interview with Executive Producer Steve Ricossa revealed, a lot of work went into the back end to ensure the now-seasoned gameplay runs smoother and looks even better on consoles. They also put in a lot of work into translating how a 72-key input device (a PC keyboard) works on a 16-key console controller. Not that Star Trek Online requires all 72 keys on PC to play—what is this, MechWarrior?—but it's always interesting to see how scrolling mouse wheels, etc., translate onto gamepads.

Star Trek Online is available now, September 6, on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
