INVERSUS is an Othello lover's bullet hell

More On: INVERSUS

Here's a clever puzzle-shooter idea I've never seen before. INVERSUS is some crazy mashup of Othello, Snake, and that Tank Battalion arcade from 1980. Not to diminish the originality of this one, though, because stuff gets crazy.

You're looking down at your square with a gun on a black-and-white board. When you shoot, it simultaneously blasts through walls and creates your path. In single player, it builds increasingly complex puzzle-solving scenarios. In versus mode, the board starts flipping like crazy as you try shooting your opponent and avoid hitting the walls their bullets are throwing up. In cooperative mode, it looks even crazier, as you avoid red-block bad guys coming after you, shooting your own paths, and trying to not throw your co-op buddy under the bus with the walls you're throwing up for them. Looks nuts. It'll definitely test your spacial awareness in this cubist bullet hell.

There's online and local multiplayer for up to four players. Thirty-plus maps to blast on. Competitive battles are 1v1 and 2v2.

Also, this is the first time I've caught the ESRB rating something E for Everyone (that part is normal) with the bulletpoint that "Users Interact." I guess that's how the ESRB describes co-op and versus play now.

INVERSUS launches Tuesday, August 16 on PlayStation 4 and PC.

INVERSUS Blasts Onto PlayStation 4 and PC Today

Face off against friends and challenge enemy swarms as opposites collide in the negative-space combat of INVERSUS, developed by Hypersect’s designer, programmer and artist Ryan Juckett.

In INVERSUS, the player's walls are the opposing player's paths and their walls are the player's paths. Each shot flips tile colors in an attempt to block, trap, and close in on the enemy. Firing a bullet opens up a path for the opposition while also closing off a path for the player. Watch the launch trailer to get an even better understanding of the basic concepts.

Features include:
Online and local multiplayer (1-4 players)
Gameplay-first design focused on an original mechanic
Over thirty unique maps to play on
Competitive battles in 1v1 and 2v2 modes
Fight for the world record in single-player and cooperative multiplayer arcade modes
A constantly changing board makes every game a fresh experience
Rewarding for both strategy and skill as you balance spatial control with quick reflexes
For people who want to get a taste of the soundtrack before picking up the game, the INVERSUS OST created by Lyvo is available on Bandcamp as well as popular outlets such as Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and more.
INVERSUS launches today for PC on the Humble store, Steam with a 10% off discount during launch week and PlayStation 4 with a 10% off discount for PS Plus subscribers for $14.99 (USD). Follow Hypersect on Twitter, Twitch or click the like button on Facebook.

About INVERSUS
INVERSUS is a negative-space shooter for one to four friends. Player movement is constrained to opposite colors of a black and white grid. My walls are your paths and your walls are my paths. Each shot flips tile colors in an attempt to block, trap and close in on the enemy. Firing a bullet opens up a path for you while also closing off a path for me. Both online and local couch play are supported. The competitive versus mode pits players against each other in 1v1 or 2v2 battles. The single-player and cooperative two-player modes pit players against endless waves of enemies as they fight for high scores on an ever-changing board.
