More On: Madden NFL 09
It looks like the rumors were dead on this time as EA officially announced that Brett Farve as the cover athlete for Madden 09 this morning (well, technically last night on the Dave Letterman show).  Peter Moore has posted some commentary on why they chose a retired athlete instead of a current one on his blog if you want something other than the gushing marketing speak of the press release.

In terms of what's actually on the disc the new game will include 85 new features and enhancements according to the press release including a new holodeck like feature that will provide a deeper tutorial on how to play the game.  It's worth nothing that former Bengal Chris Collinsworth will be providing the coller commentary with Tom Hammond instead of John Madden himself.

Here's a new trailer for the game which shows the Madden Franchise and Brett Farve through out the years.  If they didn't label the years on the screen I do wonder if you could really tell the last three years apart.
