E3 2011 Star Wars: The Old Republic Impressions

More On: Star Wars: The Old Republic
By now anyone with the slightest interest in either MMORPGs or George Lucas' six-part space opera has heard about Star Wars: The Old Republic. We all know BioWare is bringing their classic branching path story telling style to the largely World of Warcraft dominated online role-playing market and we've already had a look at combat and character classes, so what's new for E3?

Well, first there was the unveiling of Tatooine, one of the most legendary planets in a galaxy far, far away. It's expansive deserts are crawling with familiar characters such as the sand people and those green pig guys that rancors seem to enjoy eating so much. You'll get to quest the terrain and visit famous landmarks as you follow the path of the light or dark side of the force. Along the way you may also find yourself hopping in your spaceship for a trip to the icy surfaces of Hoth, or the large cities of Corrusant, or even a pre-blown up Alderaan. You may even find yourself locked in a space battle or two as you planet hop.

Each planet will feature world arcs that will have you teaming up with other players in the Old Republic to change things for better or worse on each world. During multiplayer dialog sessions the player who gets to respond will be chosen at random, so you may end up on the outside of a conversation or two.

The other big news was the announcement of major end game events that will involve multiple parties taking on extremely difficult challenges called “Operations”. Basically they're the raids that you find most major MMO's of this particular universe. The teaser trailer we got a look at showed off a heavily fortified prison full of the galaxy's most dangerous criminals being breached by an insanely huge militia of player controlled sith, bounty hunters and soldiers.

There's still no release date or news on when we'll get our hands on a beta, but GN will be sure to keep you up to date as more information becomes available.
