System Shock 2 now on Steam...and on sale

by: Russell - - Add a Comment
Last Friday we posted an article where our own Travis Huinker took a trip through System Shock 2.  Granted everyone has their own reactions to the game...and the article...but  it got me wanting to check it out for myself.  Imagine my disappointment when I found out that System Shock 2 wasn't available on Steam (my PC gaming service of choice)...until now.

If you have Steam and would like to experience System Shock 2 for yourself, not only is it now available but it's also on sale.  Until May 17th you can pick it up for $6.99, which is 30% off of the full price of $9.99.  Definitely worth picking up if you've been wanting to give this game a shot.

Now Playing: Neverwinter Last Light Edition

by: Randy - - Add a Comment
GameStop stops taking your PlayStation 2 as a trade-in next month, EVE Online shared its tenth birthday with Orson Welles, and EA just announced The Sims 4 for 2014. By the way, if you were to buy The Sims 3 plus all of its expansions right now, it would cost you $539.78.

What are you playing this weekend?

Russell Archey | staff writer | Twitter @neoscyther
I'll be spending more time with Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move. So far I'm kind of liking it as it doesn't control like the past games. In fact, it's kind of like Pipe Dream, of all things. It's a different way to play the series and requires a different strategy than the past games.

Sean Cahill | staff writer | Twitter @seancahill2
Now that my semester is over and I have a lot more free time outside of work, I'll be kicking Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen into high gear. I've been going back to Tomb Raider to try and knock that off the list (47 percent complete) so it can go on the completed stack. Outside of that, I might indulge in some World of Tanks while testing out a couple new mice and a headset.

Nathan Carter | staff writer | Twitter @natedoggcata
I’ll be putting in some more practice with Injustice: Gods Among Us. I started playing Hawkgirl who is now my anti-Solomon Grundy, Deathstroke and Aquaman spam weapon, and I have Green Arrow and Harley Quinn as my backups. I’ll probably be playing some more Zombie Tycoon 2, which is a really fun real-time strategy for consoles. I have never been a fan of RTS because, for me, it’s usually clicking a bunch of boxes that fill your screen and I have no idea what is going on. Zombie Tycoon 2 simplifies all that, and what you have is a very fun and addicting game. Finally, I am about two years late to the party but I actually picked up and started playing Dragon Age 2 which I really enjoy. Now, I never played the first game. Why does everyone hate Dragon Age 2 again? Doesn't seem like anything is wrong with it to me.

Nathaniel Cohen | staff writer | Twitter @seven_hells
I'll be spending some relaxing time on Far Cry 3’s Rook Island, stabbing dudes, getting inked, and popping hallucinogenic substances. Other items on my to-do list include more Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and spending some quality time with System Shock 2.

Sean Colleli | staff writer
I'm in full-on review mode for Zeno Clash II, so I'll be exploring the world of Zenozoik for the most part. I'm also wrapping up my reviews for all the cool tech Nyko released for the Wii U, so I'll be revisiting my modest Wii U library for some final testing.

Jeremy Duff | senior staff writer | Twitter @duff3c
Along with Mike, you can make that two for Metro: Last Light. I love this franchise so much. And Mike, the second one is just as lovely. I have a preview build on the debug Xbox 360 with the first couple of hours of the game on it. You're in for a treat.

Travis Huinker | staff writer | Twitter @travishuinker
I plan to spend some quality time with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and hopefully set some time aside for playing the recently-released Neverwinter with John.

Charles Husemann | editor-in-chief | Twitter @chusemann
Another week a bunch more MechWarrior Online to play. I've gone whole hog with a long-range missile boat build and I'm working on tweaking it so that I can safely deliver the "rain of pain" from a distance without taking any direct fire.

Randy Kalista | staff writer | Twitter @randykalista
One of two things is about to happen. Either 1) I square away my EVE Online account and start turning Gaming Nexus into gameEVE nexONLINEus as far as coverage is concerned--John loves this idea--or 2) I flip through my recent shopping spree of Xbox Indie Games and start bashing them into my face one at a time: Snops Attack! Zombie Defense, qrth-phyl, Kodu Game Lab, radiangames Fluid, Arcadecraft, and Quiet, Please! I somehow managed to avoid the top 20 most downloaded, all of which have the word "miner" in the title.

Mike Mahardy | staff writer | Twitter @mmahardy
I'll be playing Metro: Last Light. Metro 2033 is one of my favorite shooters of this generation, so I can't wait to dig into 4A's sequel, especially since they have creative license to deviate from the book's story now. Other than that, I'll be putting more time into Injustice: Gods Among Us and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Command & Conquer: Beyond the Battle part 1

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
Way back in the day, Command & Conquer: Red Alert was the very first PC game I ever bought, it was also my introduction to the RTS genre.  I only bought two more PC games after that as I moved toward console gaming, but Red Alert will always hold a special place in my heart.

This new trailer shows off the newest C&C title, simply called Command & Conquer.  Not only is the name kind of a throwback, but looking at what made the earlier games popular is playing a large role in ensuring this new Command & Conquer is as great as it can be.

First gameplay video of Batgirl in Injustice: Gods Among Us revealed

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
25 years ago in the classic graphic novel The Killing Joke, The Joker shot and paralyzed Barbara Gordon right in front of her father. Now its time for a little payback. Netherealm Studios has released the first gameplay video showing off Batgirl who will be coming to Injustice: Gods Among Us as DLC.

Thankfully it appears that Batgirl plays differently from Batman. She appears to be faster than Batman and uses more dashing attacks such as an anti air shoulder tackle, batarang projectiles and a teleport grapple move that can be used at full screen. It appears also as if her super move can only be activated while in the air, which is interesting because I believe that would make it the only super move to do so out of all the characters.
?
Batgirl will be available free if you bought the seasons pass or $4.99 if you buy it individually. No release date has been announced yet.

We also got a glimpse of The Joker's Killing Joke skin which will be part of "The Killing Joke Skin Pack" which will be sold separately.

Pre-order Anomaly 2, get Anomaly Korea for free

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
And so the march of "get a free game with an Anomaly 2 pre-order" continues.  This time, however, if you pre-order Anomaly 2, you'll receive a free copy of the not-available-anywhere-else Anomaly Korea.  You'll have to visit anomaly2game.com and pre-order it there, but - worst case scenario - typing a new URL into you address bar seems like a small price to pay.

So if you want a second copy of Anomaly 2, maybe to give away to your newborn nephew or brother as a "welcome to Earth" gift, AND a copy of the otherwise unavailable Anomaly Korea then you better get to anomaly2game.com and get to pre-ordering.  It's all only $14.99.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion receiving Forbidden Worlds DLC

by: Travis - - Add a Comment
Stardock has announced that real-time strategy game Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion will be receiving its first downloadable content titled Forbidden Worlds next month. Set in the depths of Trader Space, players will experience a new sector of the galaxy with planets that contains far more variety than previously found in the Sins of a Solar Empire series. The complete list of features include:
  • Four new planet types to colonize and exploit (Barren, Ferrus, Greenhouse, Oceanic), each created with beautiful high-res textures.
  • New Planet Specialization System: Dedicate your worlds to either social or industrial output. Devoting your planet to social improvements will increase its population and culture, at the cost of trade income and ship production. Choosing an industrial path will limit your growth and culture, but make your planet a trading and ship building powerhouse.
  • 15 new research subjects allow the races to conquer and expand onto the forbidden worlds.
  • Discover 40 new planet bonuses during your exploration of the galaxy, unlocking the dark past of the Sins’ universe.
  • Unlock five new Steam Achievements and display your mastery of forbidden space!
The Forbidden Worlds downloadable content for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion will launch on June 5 for Windows PC and retail for $4.99.

Flying Wild Hog to do a re-imaging of Shadow Warrior

by: John - - Add a Comment
What's old is hot again it seems as we have another company doing a remake of an old game. Shadow Warrior was a FPS using the Duke Nukem 3D engine from 3D Realms that tried to do an Asian themed Duke. It wasn't bad as I had some fun with it, but it never really took off.

Well, Flying Wild Hog's going to try and bring that IP back to life with a re-imagining of the series. Not much is known yet, but there's a teaser site. I'm guessing we'll hear more about this project in a month or so, maybe at E3.

In the meantime, check out the game as it was back in the day.

Manhunt coming to PSN next week. The Warriors coming soon after

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
The PS2 classics section of PSN just keeps getting better and better as Rockstar announced that two of their most underrated gems of the PS2 era are coming to the PSN soon.

Next week on May 14th, the gritty, stealth action game Manhunt from Rockstar games will be available for $9.99.

I am extremely excited about this. Sure, Manhunt may be well known for its brutal and realistic violence but underneath that is one of the best stealth games I have ever played. I thought that it was very unique with the use of security cameras and a mad man forcing you to kill tons of enemies so he can film another snuff video to sell to you sick freaks out there. It was one of the first games I played where the violence actually made me sick to my stomach and that's what I loved about it.

In even better news, one of the most underrated games of all time in my opinion, The Warriors will also be making its way to the PSN store at some point. No release date has been announced but Rockstar stated in their official news post that Manhunt "will also soon be joined by The Warriors - stay tuned, Boppers..."

New screens emerge of Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster

by: Travis - - Add a Comment
Yuna, Rikku, and Paine return in new high definition screenshots of the upcoming Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster from Square Enix. Some of the notable improvements include upgraded character models that feature additional facial expressions as well as redrawn environment and background textures. More importantly to fans, the pre-rendered cinematic of Yuna's concert performance has been increased in resolution to take advantage of the high definition graphics.

Both Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD Remasters will be included in a single disc bundle for the PlayStation 3, which will be available in 2013. In addition, the high definition remasters will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Network and playable on the PlayStation Vita.

Skyrim and Dead Island collide in Hellraid teaser trailer

by: Mike - - Add a Comment
Techland Games, the developer behind open world survival title Dead Island, recently announced Hellraid, a medieval hack-and-slash game with cooperative mechanics.

Aside form the melee combat, Hellraid showcases magic attacks and weapons in its new teaser trailer. The world and enemies are reminiscent of Bethesda's Skyrim, but the gameplay mechanics look just as crisp as they are in Dead Island.

Techland is also promising strong cooperative aspects, something they excel at, so be sure to check back at GN this summer for more news regarding Hellraid.

First images of The Wolf Among Us

by: Randy - - Add a Comment
The Wolf Among Us caught my eye (and what big eyes I have, grandma) flipping through the latest Game Informer. Hard to hate on that Vice-City-meets-Blood-Dragon glow of pulpy '80s neon noir. You'd think the big-time resurgence of remixed folklore in movies and TV would get old already--and maybe it has--but this is video games, and this is the developer that put together The Walking Dead, and this makes me have good feels about the state of episodic adventure games.

The Wolf Among Us is based on the Fables comic book series by Bill Willingham. Fables scoops up familiar faces from European folklore (and beyond), like The Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, and Pinocchio, and drops them off in a clandestine, rundown community in New York City. These Fables characters, with their powers intact, blend into the general populace as best they can. As well as can be expected, anyway.

The Big Bad Wolf is now Sheriff Bigby Wolf, policing the under-wraps cloister of characters. In The Wolf Among Us, you play Bigby, but you don't look like that huffing and puffing wolf of yore, you look like a huffing and puffing dressed-down long arm of the law. Dress code is a tad more Max Payne than Sam & Max.

Telltale Games blew our house down with these first five images: Bigby handing a beatdown to possibly the lumberjack from Little Red Riding Hood, Bigby taking a smoke break with Colin the Little Pig that built his house of straw, an '80s two-tone Fiero in front of a row of low-rent apartments, Bufkin the flying monkey from Oz in a Fables artifact museum of sorts, and Mr. Toad witnessing a TV that took a wild ride straight down on top of that sick Fiero--also, check out Bigby's shadow.

If Telltale Games puts Kavinsky on the soundtrack I will absolutely die.

EA eschews Online Pass for Fuse?

by: Matt - - Add a Comment
In a move that certainly left me stunned, our review copies of Fuse were given to us without an Online Pass. Thinking this was some kind of horrible joke I looked underneath the help document that told me the manual was included on the disc, checked behind the cover art, even tried entering the serial number from the Microsoft Authenticity label. Imagine my further surprise when the game didn't even prompt me for an Online Pass.

In all seriousness this is pretty interesting that EA would skip the Online Pass for such a multi-player heavy game. Our upcoming preview will cover some of the online play along with the game's 'Echelon' mode, and early reports are that it looks pretty good.

Saints Row IV PAX Demo, now for the world to see

by: Nathaniel - - Add a Comment
I gave Saints Row 3 a pass.  Why?  I don't really know because I really enjoyed the first two.  I just wasn't feelin' number 3 for whatever reason.

Perhaps that reason was that I never saw any gameplay footage that was anything like this, just released to the public, PAX East pre-alpha demo footage that shows off Saints Row IV's weaponized dubstep, presidential nut-punches, mechs, super-powers, and aliens.  It makes Saints Row IV look like an amalgam of all my favorite open world titles, and it's set to hit stores on August 20, nearly a full month before GTA V.  I'll be jonesing for some open-world action so hard by that point, I may have little choice but to check out Saints Row IV.

Watch the trailer and tell me you don't feel the same way.

Dead Or Alive 5 Ultimate coming soon?

by: Nathan - - Add a Comment
It appears that Dead Or Alive 5 may be getting its own Super Hyper Turbo Alpha EX Plus 2 Arcade Edition 2013 Version update soon as Dead Or Alive 5 Ultimate was announced sometime last week.

A teaser trailer was shown at a Japanese tournament which you can view below.

The update for Xbox 360 and PS3 will add Ninja Gaiden's Momoji to the roster, along with a brand new Sky City Tokyo stage. There has been no official announcement yet from Team Ninja but eventhubs.com reports that the game will be getting the exclusive content that was featured in the Playstation Vita version of the game. There don't know if any other content will make it into the update but I assume an official announcement from Team Ninja will come soon.

I love Dead Or Alive 5 so i'm really hoping this is simply an update you can download instead of a whole new game you have to buy.

Free DLC inbound for Soul Sacrifice

by: Jeremy - - Add a Comment
In addition to a variety of paid DLC in the works for the excellent Soul Sacrifice, there are at least a trio of free packs headed to game as well. The various packs will be rolled out over the course of month beginning May 28. The free lineup looks like this:
  • May 28: Headless Knight and Starving Ruin Dwellers Pack which includes two new bosses (Dullahan and Behemoth), one new map (Goliath), new Berserker magic, eight new missions, and augmented reality support.
  • June 11: A Drunk and a Chef Pack which includes two new bosses (Dwarf and Ogre) and eight new missions.
  • June 25: The Wild Wheels and Apparition Pack which brings two new bosses (Ouroboros and Wraith), new Angelus magic, and 8 new missions.
There could be more coming in the future as well as some paid DLC that we haven’t heard about yet. The game is already massive and it looks like it is going to get even larger very, very soon.

OUYA's release date gets pushed back three weeks, button defect fixed

by: John - - Add a Comment
Early backer units of the OUYA had a small problem. It seems the buttons on the controller would sometimes get stuck under the faceplate. Oops.

Well, according to CEO Julie Uhrman, that issue has been rectified and the units that will be in retail outlets won't have that problem as reported by Joystiq. The size of the button holes have been increased slightly to allow for more room and eliminating the chance the button got stuck when pressed.

Julie says that they will work with those who have received their units on the controllers. Does that mean that those that received the unit would get a new controller at no cost? She only says that customer service will help them out, but let's hope that it's an exchange program so that those folks don't have to pay to get theirs fixed or replaced.

The retail launched has been pushed back three weeks so that more units could be produced. It seems retail has increased demand on the product and in order to do that, they had to push the release date back a few weeks.
