Year in Co-op gaming reviewed

by: Chuck - - Comments (1)
The folks at Co-Optimus have posted  their look back at the year in co-op gaming.  With over 100 co-op games released this year there's certainly a lot to consider.  For me the two big co-op games of the year were Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead, two games that John and I blitzed through together at various times.  I've learned a bit about the importance of sticking together (flanking only ocassionally works) and it's always weird to play one of these games by yourself after playing them co-op (John is a much better wingman than the AI Dom. by just a bit).

What were your favorite co-op games and/or co-op experiences?  My personal favorite was from Army of Two.  John and I were pinned down by a pair AI guys in the warehouse level towards the end of the game.  One of the AI guys decided to flush us out with a grenade that hit a low wall in front of him and bounced back killing the both of them.  John and I had to pause the game because we were laughing so hard.  Let us know what you think in the comments.

YouTube and gaming

by: John - - Comments (1)
YouTube's arguably the biggest online video service around and here's an article talking about how companies, especially EA, are using it to generate some buzz and revenue. Seeing EA's response to a Tiger Wood's glitch is pretty funny in itself. I remember seeing the integration with Spore and thought it was pretty cool to be able to easily upload videos of your creations to be shared around. We use Blip.tv for our services here but we do know it's not nearly as popular as Youtube and we did start a YouTube channel although we haven't used it much yet. Chuck and I have discussed moving to other services to try and reach a wider audience with the video content. Do you think we should posting on YouTube instead of Blip? Is there another service you prefer like Vimeo?

Thanks Kotaku.

If you're going for a job, don't mention you play WoW

by: John - - Comments (0)
I've met with a few managers who actually like the fact I play video games. Reason being is that video games work on your problem solving skills and a lot of computer programming involves solving problems. Well, it seems some managers aren't liking the World of Warcraft players out there because they think they don't give 100% to their job. Personally, I haven't met anyone who's a big MMORPG person who doesn't put their job first and the game second. Not to say there aren't as you've probably read up on a few stories of marriages, relationships, and jobs lost to those playing an MMORPG too much. To me it's just like any addiction. If the person has a problem whether it be games, drugs, alcohol, or something else they are going to not be the model worker in any case. Managers should look at past work as well as references to judge a person and not by the hobbies they partake in.

Thanks BoingBoing.

November NPD numbers show Wii is unstoppable and PS3 gets a small bump

by: John - - Comments (0)
Below are the November NPD numbers and what can you say about Nintendo. When i talked to Chuck earlier he was expecting about a million sales of the Wii. Little did we know that it sold over 2 million instead. The 360 hit a solid 836k in sales while the PlayStation 3... well you can just see for yourself below and make your own assumptions. All consoles saw a boost in numbers but nothing like the Wii and DS. I mean the Wii sold more than 5X the amount of PS3s and a little more than 2X the 360s.

   October November  Difference
PlayStation 2  136,000 206,000 +70,000
PlayStation 3  190,000 378,000 +188,000
PSP  193,000 421,000 +228,000
Xbox 360  371,000 836,000 +465,000
Wii  803,000 2,040,000 +1,237,000
Nintendo DS  491,000 1,570,000 +1,079,000

Best Game Mechanics of 2008 discussed

by: Chuck - - Comments (1)
Gamasutra has posted their top five game mechanics of 2008 and there's not much to disagree with as they cover the time travel mechanic from Braid, the zombie mechanics from Left 4 Dead, puzzle making with LittleBigPlanet, and a few others.

One thing they don't cover is that the game industry seemed to move away from quick time button sequences this year.  Sure there were a few games that utilized this but for the most part it seemed like companies are starting to leave this behind them.  Is there anything Gamasutra missed?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Dragonball Evolution trailer about as bad as expected

by: Chuck - - Comments (6)
Dear Chow Yun Fat,
What the hell happened. You were in Hard Boiled, The Killer, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  Hell even The Corrupter was a pretty damn good movie but now you're doing the Dragonball Z movie which looks very not good in this trailer.  We know you have to sell yourself out a bit for the Western movies but if the movie tanks we'll just pretend it was someone else OK?

Is the Observer in Fringe inspired by Half-Life 2's G-Man?

by: Chuck - - Comments (3)
If you've been watching the new Fox show Fringe (and you should be, it's actually a pretty solid show) you've no doubt noticed that each show has an appearance by the mysterious Observer.  A man in a trench coat who appears in the background  of nearly each show (and was the focus of one show) and observes the goings on of the show.  If you haven't seen it or missed him you should check out this video that shows every appearance of the guy in the show:
After watching the video and the show I was a reminded of Half-Life 2's mysterious G-man who also pops up along the way and watches what Gordon Freeman is doing. The two share a few common traits:
 - The both wear dark suits
 - The both carry around a suitcase
 - The both show up when things are about to get interesting.

I'm not going to say the folks behind Fringe have ripped off the character or anything but the two do seem very similar in terms of appearance and how they are used in their respective genres.  Here's a compilation of clips of the G-Man's appearances in Half-Life 2, let me know what you think in the comments and hopefully we can get an answer from someone at Fox through the power of the Internets

What is the most pirated game of 2008?

by: John - - Comments (0)
It shouldn't be a surprise but the most pirated gamed according to Torrent Freaks is...... Barbie Fashion Show for the PC... No wait. It's Spore of course. Coming in at a whopping 1,700,000 downloads since September. Crysis is in the top 10 but what maybe is nice to see is that Crysis Warhead didn't break the top 10 meaning that the lower pricing and lower PC requirements worked or not many pirates cared about the sequel. Of the top 5, four are Electronic Arts games.
