Help your fuzzy-wuzzy bear friend survive in Wrongworld, now on Steam

More On: Wrongworld

One man show Sludj games announced this morning that their (his?) survival game Wrongworld has moved out of Steam Early Release to become a full fledged game.

Wrongworld centers on a little fuzzy-wuzzy bear friend sort of guy who has crash landed on a distant world, and now must use his wits to survive. Unlike many survival games, the mood of Wrongworld is surprisingly light and whimsical, keeping the player chuckling as they slowly starve to death. The main character begins the game with no tools, so he begins banging on rocks and knocking down trees by slamming into them with his forehead. Controls are simple and accessible, and after a few moments you will be jumping and head-butting with the best of them.

With a non-permadeath option available, Wrongworld looks like an easy entry point into the survival genre for inexperienced players. Of course, there is also a regular mode that will cheerfully hand you your rear, for those that are looking for more of a challenge.

I took a swipe at Wrongworld this morning at 4:00 AM instead of sleeping, and was greatly amused. I meandered around for a bit, smashing rocks and trees. I eventually managed to create a campfire, but then it started raining and the fire went out. Abandoning that, I began wandering in search of food. With no vegetables just laying around, I eventually succumbed to temptation and attacked some innocent looking google-eyed monsters. They made quick work of me, and before I knew it, I was staring at the game over screen. All told, I managed to survive for about a half hour. Not bad for a first run, I figure. Initial impressions: Wrongworld is better than sleep. I plan on going back in for more punishment after doing some work this afternoon (if I don’t fall asleep with my face on the keyboard).

The graphics in Wrongworld are simple, but charming. Special note: when the sun fall in the evening and the stars come out, do yourself a favor and look up. The sky is spectacular. Low end PCs should have little problem running the game. According to the game’s (extremely witty) Steam page: “You don't need a beast - as mentioned above, my ancient laptop (it's called Larry, by the way) has something known as a Radeon HD 6520G stuffed inside it, and it can just about deliver 30fps with all the settings on "Low". Definitely wouldn't want to go older/lamer than that, but the fact you're actually looking at 3-dimensional games on Steam makes me think you've probably already got that covered.”

Jamie Coles, the man behind Sludj games, promises to continue working on Wrongworld  and adding more content. Wrongworld seems to have a dedicated community built around it, and many folks seem to be enjoying playing the game with younger kids, which is nice. By no means is Wrongworld a kids’ game, but it is a game that might provoke kids to contribute ideas and shout directions. Just be ready for some added tension as your kid screams bloody murder that you better not let your fuzzy-wuzzy bear friend die. No pressure, every kid needs a few emotional scars.

Wrongworld is available on Steam for $14.99.
