Maize looks serious but it has sentient corn and a knockoff Teddy Ruxpin

More On: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Maize

Cornfields don't tend to incite thoughts of absurdist comedy (thanks, horror movies). No, I don't get a lot of laugh-out-loud moments from checking out cornstalks. But Maize says hello. From Canadian developer Finish Line Games (Cell Damage HD), Maize is a first-person something or other? Perhaps "puzzle adventure game" is as close as I'm going to get for now.

While it looks like a lush walking simulator, Maize disavows any shoe-gazing introspection or deep, meaningful reflections on the past. It's meant to be silly—which sounds quite refreshing, given the dissonance that creates with the stunning visuals. There's a farmhouse, an underground laboratory, and two scientists that somehow botched their government-mandated instructions and accidentally created sentient corn. Which doesn't even mention the fact that you've got a grumpy Russian Teddy Ruxpin knockoff kickin' it with you. Who know what you are in this game.

For now, it'll suffice that something that looks like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter might not take itself quite so seriously. Sure, once you see the video, it'll be obvious that Maize could work on its comedic timing a little bit, but I'll cut it some slack until we see more.

Maize is coming to PC this Fall 2016.

Talking corn, a surly knock-off of Teddy Ruxpin, colossally inept government conspiracies - Maize is an absurdist comedy wrapped in a first-person adventure with no shortage of weirdness. It's coming this fall and we have the debut trailer to share.

A Conspiracy Grows (literally) in the American Heartland - Maize, Debut Trailer

May 18, 2016 - This is not another tale of forlorn memories, failed aspirations, or even life-altering introspection. Quite the contrary, Maize is the story of what happens when two government scientists misinterpret a memo and create sentient corn.

Channeling elements of Monty Python and the funnier episodes of the X-Files, Maize is an absurdist, first-person adventure with a cornucopia of highbrow puzzles to solve, talking oddities to meet, and mysteries to be harvested, coming later this fall to PC.

Explore the desolate farm for clues to the past, venture deeper into the underground research facility, and make a few colorful friends along the way, including a grumpy Russian knock-off of the most technologically advanced toy ever created: Teddy Ruxpin.

Keep your ears to the ground and follow @FinishLineGames for the latest details on Maize, coming to PC later this fall from Finish Line Games.

Okay, we're done with the corny puns, for now ;)
