What we're playing this weekend

Posted by: Chuck at 2/17/2008 6:41 PM - Comments (0)
Elliot Bonnie
Looks like the usual suspects on the 360 this weekend... COD4, Gears of War, and possibly some Mass Effect. I am counting the minutes until Bully: SE comes out and I am hoping that Army of Two is a worth while romp.

Sean Colleli
For some reason I've been playing a lot of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. I forgot just how good it is. The gameplay is easily the best of the series (the 3D camera clinches it), although MGS1's story is slightly better. And MGS2...did anybody like Sons of Liberty? I've also been playing some Descent 1 and Decent 2, you gotta revisit the old mid 90's classics once in a while.

Charles Husemann
I'll be spending more time with the preview build of God of War: Chains of Olympus as well as trying out the demo of Patapon that Sony released on Friday. I would imagine that a good deal of time will be spent seperating heads from bodies in Team Fortress 2 (sniper FTW) and maybe a little time with Lost Odyssey.

Randy Kalista
Despite my best efforts, Pirates of the Burning Sea hasn't been able to keep my attentions undivided. Yes, I'll testify that the hot ship-on-ship action is everything it should be (gawd, it's awesome), but I won't be able to completely hold down my breakfast until Flying Labs seriously -- and I mean: seriously -- addresses hand-to-hand combat. It's embarrassing. In the meantime, I'll travel 1,000 years down Memory Lane with Lost Odyssey's amnesiac pretty-boy lead.

Kolby Kappes
DMC4 – My 360 has been getting lonely and this arrived from GameFly this week. Pirates of the Burning Sea as I still am not quite over this one yet. I’ll have more scheming as we work on conquering the evil British and the hated French.

Dan Keener
I will be continuing my review of the Panasonic AX200 Gaming projector by hitting it with some HD-DVD content, using it as a monitor for my laptop and watching the great American Race in HD on Sunday. Also in the house is another projector, that Chuck and I hope to hang on the ceiling on Saturday. As far as gaming goes, I imagine some Rock Band, Burnout Paradise and possibly some Call of Duty 4 campaign are in the works on the Xbox 360. If i can slip in the time, maybe a little Halo 2 Vista, Gears of War and Crysis Demo on the PC.

Matt Mirkovich
I'm getting close to the end of Devil May Cry 4, so I'll probably be able to complete that this weekend. I also picked up Lost Odyssey, awesome package and all to play. Whenever I go out I've got my DS and Professor Layton and The Curious Village on hand, now if only I could find a working hotspot to get the new puzzles every week.

Tyler Sager
I'll be playing more Sins of a Solar Empire, mostly. I might break out a little Folklore for a change of pace, but it's going to primarily be another weekend of galactic conquest.

LittleBigPlanet does math

by: John - - Comments (1)
What better way to show off the editor in LittleBigPlanet then to create a working calculator with over 1,600 parts? That's what this guy did in the video below. Ars has the details on what went into this monstrous creation. Sort of makes the GN logo by Chuck very lame in comparison. :)

Tearing up the floor with Mickey

by: Sean Colleli - - Comments (1)
Konami has been known to pair their DDR series with the odd license now and then, but this is pushing it--DDR Disney Grooves.  Coming exclusively to the Wii next March, the game will include famous Disney characters and 40 Disney songs.  Don't get me wrong, Goofy and Donald breakdancing sounds pretty entertaining, but I can't imagine anyone actually dancing to "A Whole New World," unless it happens to be my uncle drunk off his rear at a wedding reception. Midway gives Wii more minigames with Game Party 2

by: Sean Colleli - - Comments (0)
I guess for Midway, one collection of party minigames just wasn't enough.  Game Party 2 will be coming to the Wii with 11 new minigames, and hopefully continue the million-selling success of the first Game Party.  Midway should be careful here--the casual market they're targeting doesn't buy many games, and as a result doesn't adopt sequels very well.  A good example is Nintendo's Brain Age; the sequel, aptly named Brain Age 2, didn't do nearly as well as the first game because the casual consumers didn't make the distinction.  Maybe that's why Nintendo is naming the Wii Sports sequel Wii Sports Resort.  Casual gamers are easy to please, but because they are satisfied with one or two minigame collections, they don't buy nearly as much and sooner or later the market is going to get saturated. NFS: Undercover Cops and Robbers mode demonstrated

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Here's a new video from EA that shows off the Cops 'N Robbers mode in Need for Speed:Undercover.  It's all pretty simple, as the robbers you grab the money and take it to the home icon.  The cops just have to stop you.  It certainly looks interesting but I wonder how well it will work on bigger maps.

Nintendo reminds you about a lot of stuff you don't care about, promises better stuff in 09

by: Sean Colleli - - Comments (0)
I know I've been hating on Nintendo a lot lately, but 2008 was supposed to be a good holiday year for real gamers.  Instead, Nintendo is promising titles like Wii Music and Animal Crossing, and a substantial increase in Wii consoles so that the casual mob can play those casual games.  Maybe this will be the Christmas where all the soccer moms finally get their hands on the eternally scarce console, and the baffling supply shortages end.  At least 09 will be good, with the promise of Punch Out!, Sin and Punishment 2, expanded SD card use, and of course the amazing Conduit.  Next year is definitely shaping up to be more satisfying for the hardcore crowd (this year's E3 was almost as big a blunder for Nintendo as "Riiiiidge Racer" was for Sony in 06), but I'm still waiting for some real surprises.  After all, we still haven't seen any brand new, hardcore-friendly IPs from Nintendo, although The Conduit seems like a worthy substitute.  Let's just hope Nintendo uses WiiMotionPlus for something besides foam bats in Wii Sports 2...Zelda, please?  Please? Harpoon gets an update

by: Sean Colleli - - Comments (0)
Matrix Games has released a new patch for Harpoon - Commander's Edition.  This patch has a lot of fixes in it but also adds some substantial new content as well, so if you have the game you might want to check the update list and download the patch.  Check the press release for the contents of the update and where to get it. New Far Cry 2 trailer completely Trigenless

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Far Cry 2 is shaping up to be a very pretty, very fun looking game but I'm still not sure why Ubisoft kept the Far Cry name as there are few elements from the original game in the game.  The game does look like two tons of fun in a one ton bag but we'll know that for sure when the game ships in two weeks.

Rock Band prescribes Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Motley Crue's #1-selling album, Dr. Feelgood, is the sixth album to join the Rock Band Music Store's downloadable content.  This 1989 headbanger is available starting October 14th for Xbox 360, and October 16th for PlayStation 3.  I love the All Music Guide's summation of Motley Crue:  "[Their] albums were a lot like episodes of Married With Children in the sense that they may not be great works of art but can be darn entertaining."  Brilliant.  The full 16-track album will be available for $15.99 (1280 Microsoft "space bucks") or $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points) per track.  (The PS3 prices were absent from the press release.)  Here are several of the tracks included on the Dr. Feelgood album, some of which gave Motley Crue their first #1 hits:
  • "Dr. Feelgood"
  • "Slice of Your Pie"
  • "Rattlesnake Shake"
  • "Kickstart My Heart"
  • "Without You"
  • "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)"
  • "Sticky Sweet"

Midway has relaunched its Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe website at the slow-loading worldscollide.com, which is all full of thunderstorms, Flash-y swaying of the screen, and the standard conglomeration of videos, screenshots, and official forum community (sorry, "Kommunity") link to the Midway boards.

LittleBigPlanet's Z-Axis controls annoys Media Molecule co-founder at times, might be fixed later

by: John - - Comments (0)
We all know how LittleBigPlanet's been delayed a few times and that's natural on the course of creating a very ambitious game. Another little annoyance will ship with the game and might be fixed later rather then delaying the release. Speaking with Eurogamer TV, Mark Healey of Media Molecule found the Z-Axis control for the game can get annoying at times but thinks they have a good compromise right now. They can fix it later on if they wish via a DLC as well as offer other improvements on down the line. October 24th is the release date so it won't be long before everyone else can get to play it and see if this aspect annoys them too but I'm sure the game will be fun enough to bypass the issue if there is one.

Starcraft II becomes a trilogy

by: John - - Comments (0)
Shacknews has a report from Blizzcon where it was announced that Starcraft II's single player campaign will be released in three stages. The decision to do this was so that Blizzard would avoid a lengthy delay on the game. Plans for the multiplayer portion hasn't changed but some units will only be available in the single player game. Terrans: Wings of Liberty will be followed by Zerg: Heart of the Swarm and finally Protoss: Legacy of the Void. They are going to differentiate the campaigns and add more story elements and cinematics with this change.

I'm not really disappointed by this decision as I'll probably play more of the multiplayer portion anyways so it's good they aren't going to delay the game longer for the single player campign portion. Putting the other two out as expansion discs will generate more revenue for Blizzard and as long as the content feels like a full product then I'm fine with the decision. I'm sure most of the folks want to get their hands on the game sooner rather than later anyways.

FIFA 2009 has incredible first week sales. Is Madden jealous?

by: Nathan - - Comments (0)
Of course Madden '09 can't be jealous of FIFA '09, their both published by EA sports. However it seems that the FIFA franchise is increasing in popularity, selling over 1.2 million copies in the first week and that's just in Europe. Madden '09 reached reached roughly 2.6 million units, by the end of August 2008, the month it was released. So does Football have the green eye for futeball? Or could it possibly be that the over saturation of past Madden games and other football games of the market has led to no new growth in the ranks of the football faithful? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop? The world may never know. [READ MORE]

Blue wizard your life force is running out

by: John - - Comments (0)
And the new character classes being revealed continues. Blizzard has said the Barbarian would be the only returning class in Diablo III and today they unveiled the Wizard at BlizzCon. In the description, she doesn't use the term sorcerer and prefers the term wizard. I know there were a ton of sorcerer players out there and I bet they'll be turning their sights on the wizard when the game's released. Sorry to all your sorcerer fans.

Classic Gaming Trivia for 9/10/08

by: John - - Comments (2)
Wednesday's trivia was the great Whiplash or Fatal Racing on the PC. I used to play this in the computer labs at Ohio State with a bunch of folks on networked computers. I also had a setup in the dorm room with a null modem cable running to my roommate' s computer upstairs. I really wished Gremlin Interactive would've come out with another one.

Today's game actually come up because of a discussion between me and Chuck on who was the better basketball player.

Gaming Gibs for 10/10/2008

by: Chuck - - Comments (0)
Here are a few things I missed while realizing that I also believe:
  • GiantBomb has a ton of new information on Halo Recon, yes it's a standalone game...probably Bungie's last work with the franchise
  • Microsoft backs down on the XBLA delisting thing for now, hopefully a long while
  • Would the last company out of the ESA please turn off the lights and lock the doors?  Thank you.
  • We're, here, we want on Steam...get used to it?  Nah, not  really that good of a slogan...
  • Design 101 goes to Hell's Highway and back
  • Meatspace version of the LittleBigPlanet Sackboy a little less cuddly, more creepy than digital counterpart

There are some good pre-order deals out there right now to take advantage of.  If you can't wait for another month, then look to pick up the novel, comic books or other merchandise as outlined after the jump. Painterly Kollector's Edition cover art for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

by: Randy - - Comments (1)
Looks like I'm in the minority for this one, but the newly-revealed Kollector's Edition cover art for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is easily one the worst covers I've seen this console generation.  Wonder Woman's deer-in-the-headlights stare, Sonya's boyish facial structure, Kano's 'eff yeah!' fist in the air, Superman's zombified sleepwalking stance, Liu Kang's "C'mon Ride The Train" kung fu pose, The Flash's 'you gotta be kidding me' head tilt, the screwed-up inner perspective on Raiden's hat ... Ugh.  I'll have to let Cyril, The Cover Critic, weigh in on this one (who's seen worse, but definitely seen a lot better, too).

Speed art videos are always breathtaking to behold, but my opinion still stands.  Feel free to bash me in the comments.

Tekken 6 coming to PS3 and 360

by: Randy - - Comments (0)
Sony has just lost its monopoly on the Tekken series, as Namco Bandai announced that Tekken 6 will share the brawler love on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  And while it's still at least a year out -- Fall 2009 -- that could place it in a very dangerous line of fire with Street Fighter IV (which still has no announced console date, but I'm just sayin').  No, I'm not trying to stir up hate:  Tekken has a solid 14-year legacy of its own that it's building on, and the character roster of Kazuya Mishima, King, Nina Williams, Paul Phoenix, Michelle Chang, Marshall Law, Yoshimitsu, and Jack (along with plenty of unlockable characters) has been raking in solid critical scores from reviewers for years now.  The only difference is that Xbox-only owners can now discover why its sold 32 million units over a decade and a half.

These half dozen screens are fresh out of Tokyo Game Show 2008.
