Microsoft's looking at detecting fingers with Kinect

At short distances, the Microsoft Kinect camera can detect fingers as shown by a few indie developers. Well, Microsoft's looking to make that a reality at greater distances on the console with a software update.

Eurogamer is reporting that Microsoft's working on software to raise the depth camera's resolution from detecting at 320x240 to 640x480. At that resolution, Eurogamer says it's conceivable that Kinect would be able to detect fingers and hand rotation.

With 4x amount of information to process, I'm wondering if the lag will increase. For me, I find the lag a little bit of an annoyance and I'd rather see the effort used to minimize that aspect. Don't get me wrong, being able to detect more detailed items would be cool, but I want to see better performance.
